The Vancouver Highland Games began on November 22nd, 2014 and it’s a weeklong event that will end on the 30th of November. The Highland Games is a Scottish Tradition that has continued on for decades upon decades. These games are a competition amongst men who wish to find out who is the strongest in the group. They compete is rigorous events that strain the human body, showing just how far we can take ourselves as humans. Every time the Highland Games come to Vancouver it causes a city wide growth in profit, this year in 2014 it was no different.
Thousands upon thousands of people in British Columbia & Alberta drove down to Vancouver in order to feast of Scottish Food, enjoy the festivities and watch these men brutalize their bodies in physical activities that no normal man could accomplish. A higher ratio of people have attended this year compared to the last five years which has caused a 12% increase on the 32.5% increase in profit that comes every year with the Highland Games for certain industries such as the food industry. This means there was a 42.5% increase in profit for hotels, restaurants and certain stores.
It’s incredible to see that something as simple as the Highland Games can bring major growth to a city such as Vancouver. You never hear people speaking about the Highland Games. It’s much like October Fest, when it comes around you just have to experience what it has to offer.
